What is Garcinia Cambogia?
Originating in Indonesia, garcinia cambogia, also called the tamarind fruit, is a tropical fruit that is rich in many vitamins and nutrients, including niacin, riboflavin, iron, thiamine, calcium, and phosphorus. The fruit itself has a sour flavor and is often used in traditional Asian dishes. It is the skin of the fruit, and the substance hydroxycitric acid that it contains, that is said to assist in weight loss.
Hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, is reported to decrease a person’s appetite as well as prevent the body from storing food as fat. This is the active ingredient in garcinia cambogia supplements, typically making up approximately 60 percent of the pill or liquid, though this percentage can vary depending on the distributor.
How Can Garcinia Cambogia Aid in Weight Loss?
When a person is trying to lose weight through diet and exercise, it is not uncommon for them to have the urge to eat, even when they are not necessarily hungry. Some people eat out of boredom, when they are feeling lonely or stressed out, or sometimes merely out of habit.
The hydroxycitric acid from the garcinia cambogia extract works to block this urge by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain. When a brain receives an influx of serotonin, the person feels happier and more at ease, reducing the chances of them engaging in emotional eating. By eliminating the urge to eat unnecessary food, the person significantly increases their chances of achieving weight loss success.
Hydroxycitric acid works in another way as well: it prevents the body from storing fat. This is accomplished by blocking the enzyme adenosine triphosphate-citrate (pro-3S)-lyase, or ATP citrate (pro-3S)-lyasec, from converting any energy that is not used into fat within the body. In other words, hydroxcitric acid allows the body to burn sugars and carbohydrates rather than turn them into fat.
Side Effects of Garcinia Cambogia
As with any supplement, there are bound to be a few side effects that users of garcinia cambogia should be advised about prior to them taking the extract. Please note side effects that are reported for garcinia cambogia are very rare and aren’t typically. The most common reactions include nausea, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and headaches. These side effects could be attributed to the changes in diet that generally take place when a person starts taking garcinia cambogia, in which case they would go away after a short period of time. If the symptoms persist, you may want to stop taking the supplement.
Studies have not been able to conclusively determine if garcinia cambogia is safe for use while a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding, so they are generally advised not to take the extract during that time. Hydroxycitric acid can lower a person’s blood sugar levels, so patients with diabetes should not take it, as it may lower their glucose to an unsafe level. HCA has also been shown to worsen dementia, so patients with Alzheimer’s should refrain from taking garcinia cambogia as well.
Despite the potential side effects of taking garcinia cambogia as a weight loss supplement, there have been no reports of dangerous reactions in any clinical studies or any other usage. When taken properly, the extract is relatively safe and can be very helpful is losing stubborn weight. Before taking this or any other supplement, it is recommended that you consult your physician to make sure that it is the right choice for you.
